Greater Coa Valley Portugal

The area

Greater Coa Valley is located in northern Portugal, close to the Spanish border. The area is rocky with mainly grasses and shrubs as vegetation. In the valleys it is greener and has more trees. In the valley, the river Coa flows through the area.

In this area, we cooperate with Rewilding Europe. Read more about the rewilding project Greater Coa Valley.

Grazing target

The tauros have been deployed to ensure that fires are less likely to spread. By keeping vegetation short, fire is less likely to jump over. In recent years, the area has been ravaged by forest fires.

In addition, they will transform the area into biodiverse mosaic habitats with their grazing behaviour.

Recreation

The rewilding landscape of the Great Côa Valley lends itself perfectly to nature tourism. Located between the Douro River in the north and the Serra da Malcata in the south, the Côa Valley is a spectacular mix of river gorges, Mediterranean oak forests and shrubs, rocky heathlands and former arable land and orchards that are now returning to nature. The 200-kilometre Côa Valley Grand Route takes tourists and nature lovers past several nature reserves, allowing them to enjoy the varied wildlife and beautiful landscapes.
